When Joey and I decided to buy our Heber house a year ago, the biggest selling point for me was the big windows. 12 big windows in our great room to welcome all that Heber sunshine. 12 big windows to keep this California girl from hibernating during those long Heber winters. 12 big windows for a gorgeous view of Timpanogos and Cascade mountains (and the pigs next door). The cute old couple across the street informed us that before we moved in the running joke in our neighborhood was that everyone could watch TV with the previous owners because not a single one of those 12 big windows had any curtains. Joey and I decided curtains would not be a priority for us (do you know how much it costs to cover 12 big windows?!) and we put them in the 5-10 year plan, pinning up green flannel bed sheets instead, to maintain some semblance of privacy.

One day as we as we chatted with Joey's boss's delightful wife, she told us about a friend who had made her own curtain rods using PVC pipes and a little spray paint. I admit I was skeptical as I often am when it comes to being crafty. But a few months later I decided to really look into the idea and found all sorts of clever ways to create DIY curtains. So Joey and I set out on our homespun adventure and bought electrical conduit, L-brackets, nuts, bolts, and screws, spray paint, saw sharpeners, and cabinet knobs. It only took one afternoon of nailing, sawing, and spraying to fashion our 12 curtain rods. Incredible! With the money we saved on the rods we decided to buy real curtains (sewing curtain panels for 12 big windows seemed too domestic for my skill level) and soon we had everything we needed.

We finally decided to put up those curtains yesterday and after 6 hours, 42 screws for 21 brackets, only 6 extra holes in the wall, 8 rods, 14 curtain panels, and 2 very needy dogs we completed our DIY masterpiece.
