A Winter Poem
I am told that Spring arrives in
Heber a month later than the rest of Utah. How disappointing. So as I looked
out my window the other morning at the freshly fallen, 6 inches of April snow
we had received over night I got to wondering: perhaps if I gave Winter a
proper good-bye it would get the hint and be on its way. The following is my
attempt at a proper good-bye. But Joey wouldn't let me post it unless I wrote a
rebuttal as well, for fair representation. Fine.
Ode to
Winter's Death
Farewell,
Fair Winter.
You who
make the trees to die
My feet to
slip
My heart
to cry
My puffy
coats
My woolen
pants
Cannot
dispel your icy trance
You who
make the bitter breeze
My breath
to burn
My snot to
freeze
No longer
shall you torment me
With hopes
of warmth dashed by degree
Farewell,
Fair Winter.
You who
make the goose to bump
My clothes
to frump
My thighs
to plump
For now
the sun with gracious beam
Will usher
in my summer dream
The
flow'rs to bloom
The world
to wake
And....
What's this? More snow?!
For
goodness sake!
Rebuttal
to Ode to Winter's Death
Farewell,
Fair Winter.
You who
make the stars to shine
The snow
to fall
The world
refine
My skis
are cracked
My ice
picks dull
But my
playful winter heart is full
You who
deck the yuletide halls
Hang
wreaths and stockings
On our
walls
No longer
shall I go to bed
With
dreams of ski slopes in my head
Farewell,
Fair Winter.
You who
make the fire to glow
My soul to
warm
With hot
cocoa
For now
the snow is melting fast
My winter
wonderland is past
Jack Frost
is gone
It's sad,
but then,
I can
finally feel
My toes
again!

Clever, very clever.
