Our Fence

I'm really proud of Joey. For the last several weeks he has been laying out plans to build a fence in our new yard. When we first started looking for a house I wanted to make sure it had a yard big enough for a garden. And maybe some horses. And a small soccer field. I didn't think I was asking for too much. We moved into our Heber house the day after Thanksgiving last year, and the next week all of our two acres was covered in snow, which meant we would need to wait until Spring to make any of our big plans come true. Well I'm not convinced that Spring is here yet, but now that most nights don't actually drop below freezing Joey is rearing to get to work. He already started our garden weeks ago- we have all sorts of fruit and vegetable starters sitting in plastic Walmart flower pots in our living room, like a regular greenhouse.

We can only afford to put a fence around a quarter of our yard for now, and Joey wanted to make sure our first fence also encompassed the garden. That's to keep the deer out. We've talked with several of the neighbors and although they have mentioned moose, cougar, and even bear sightings, they've never mentioned deer. I'm not so sure our 5-foot wire fence is going to do much to keep the bears out. Especially once they see Pia, our 7-pound Aussie/Pomeranian wiggling her nubbin and yapping like she just made a new best friend. And Mac, our other Aussie, won't be any help since he runs away from anything that is not me or Joey.

But a fence we will build! And Joey is doing an awesome job. I helped once, but I'm not very useful when it's still cold enough for icicles. I think this gives Joey the opportunity to feel like a real homesteader. He's getting to know a lot of our new neighbors, too, as they've offered tools and advice. As of today he has a third of the posts put in and he's feeling pretty good. I'm really proud of him. No wild animals will touch our garden!

Meanwhile, Pia is in timeout for eating our vegetable starters.

  1. Lucky you, I heard about your blog and will now be blog stalking you! :) I am so jealous that you have that much land!!! Sounds like we have similar interests in land and animals. ;) We have chickens, a garden, a dog, and I wish we had enough land so I could have a horse!
