Goal #3: Visit 3 new temples (1/3)
1/3 - Provo City Center
Wow, what a beautiful temple. The morning after the original tabernacle
burned down back in 2010 Joey and I drove right past the smoldering building on
our way to California for Christmas. I didn't have any particular attachment to
the tabernacle like most Utah County residents have, but it was still pretty
sad to see that smoke rising from the hollowed out, hundred year old building.
Less than a year after the fire, in the October General Conference, President
Monson announced that the remaining walls of the tabernacle would be restored
and renovated as part of a new temple, the second in Provo. There's a pretty
neat video about that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVoZ_5kGhqc
Well Joey and I finally made our way down there to do an endowment
session and had a really great experience. I love how they preserved the
original pioneer design and architecture, and being in the Telestial Room reminded
me of the Copenhagen, Denmark temple with its murals of local flora and fauna
(incidentally, the Denmark temple was the second of 4 existing temples converted
from existing buildings, the others being Vernal Utah, Manhattan New York, and
now Provo City Center). The Provo City Center Temple is a beautiful addition to
the city.
