Goal #38: Try 30 new recipes
I've said it before, but I can't get excited about writing about
recipes. So I'm simplifying....
14/30 - Slow cooker turkey breast in apple juice
Slow cooker recipe book
Boring. Probably because turkey breasts are boring.
15/30 - Green beans (garlic and parmesan)

Delicious. Will make again.
16/30 - Slow cooker smothered chicken
6 Sisters
Not as good as I expected
17/30 - Stroganoff

As good as I expected
18/30 - Homegrown turkey, brined and roasted
Our good neighbors/Joey's boss raised a turkey for us last year that we
were supposed to eat for Thanksgiving. But with so much family coming in for
the holiday we didn't want to risk a failed turkey experiment, so we waited a
couple extra months. Thanks once again to YouTube, Joey was able to kill, pluck,
and gut his first turkey with minimal complication and we promptly immersed
that naked bird into a pot of garlic-infused brine to soak for 48 hours. When I
took the brined turkey out of the pot to put it in the roaster it did NOT feel
like a normal turkey. It was hard and stiff and I couldn't tie its legs
together or bend its wings behind its back to put it in the roaster. Something
about rigor mortis. Gross. But we roasted it for 6 hours and when we took it
out of the roaster it smelled heavenly and the meat was juicy, juicy, juicy. It
didn't taste much better than a store bought turkey, but it made Joey feel
really good about his turkey-killing-plucking-gutting abilities and I think
we'll be getting some of our own turkeys this spring.
