1/5 - Wasatch County Fair Days carnival and parade

Apparently the Wasatch County Fair Days in Heber are like Christmas to anyone who grew up here. Unfortunately I didn't realize this until after the fact and so probably didn't appreciate the experience as much as I could have. Joey and I took the girls to the fair and had fun walking around. By the time I decided I wanted to take Sadie on the carousel the ticket line was a hundred minutes long, so we settled for a picture instead. 

This was also the weekend of the Kamas trip with favorite-neighbor-of-the-weekend Shauna, who kindly invited us to sit with her at the parade. It was a fun, small-town parade and once Sadie realized it was candy the parade participants kept throwing out she was thrilled. So much candy!




2/5 - Snowbird Oktoberfest

If you've read everything to this point you know that we spent our anniversary up at Snowbird, sans babies. We didn't even know Oktoberfest was happening (and why would it- it was the middle of August) but we were there just in time for opening day. Snowbird's Oktoberfest is ranked among the top 10 Oktoberfests in the country, by whom I can't remember, but it was awesome. Lederhosen, polka music, and tasty brats made for a splendid end to our anniversary trip. Also, it reminded me of my time in Germany as an exchange student, so that was pretty sweet.

There are a few things in life I can always count on- chocolate chips, summer, and Downton Abbey , to name a few.   At the bittersweet conclusion of the Masterpiece series Maggie Smith's character reflects: "It makes me smile the way every year we drink to the new year, whatever it may bring." I appreciate her optimism, if not her passive assertion that the future just kind of happens to us. I like to think that we can have a little more control over what happens in our lives, the keyword being *can*.   As I listened to those final lines I thought about how bleak the future often seems and how easy it would be to curl up on my couch and watch Downton Abbey reruns while the future happens to me. #47: Pay off Camry loan

My favorite birthday gift this year was paying off the last extra bit of loan for our Camry. We are back down to one car payment. Hooray! Joey was certain that the day we paid it off it would break down in the canyon. Hasn't happened yet! We intend to drive that car into the ground. And if it lasts another 12 years Sadie will be able to drive it. There's a fun thought.

We were in love with Sadie from the get-go; though to be honest, for the first few weeks I felt like I was babysitting, keeping Sadie's birth mom, Sarah (not her real name) updated with texts and photos every few days. Those were rough exchanges, I'm sure for both of us. Joey and I held our breath during the seven months leading up to finalization in court and Sadie's sealing to us in the temple, especially as more than one well-meaning? individual told us stories about couples they knew who had adopted only to have the birth mother or father change their mind and take the child back. "You never know!" They would say. "But I do hope that doesn't happen with you." Please never, ever tell these stories to adopting couples until after things have settled.
